Police cars raced wildly toward the twin towers --- lights flashing, tires screeching --- traffic swinging left and right. Finally, the big shots caught on. Calls went out everywhere, the White House, the Pentagon, the FBI.
Suddenly, the night was filled with signals. Signals from the good guys---signals from the bad guys---and prayers, prayers, prayers---prayers from everywhere.(138)
Greg and Atta abruptly stopped their fighting when Atta's cell phone pierced the air. In their well-trained military minds, it acted like a referee's whistle. "I told them not to call me here, unless my private line has been broken into." He was hesitant.(141)
The towers were invisible, veiled in the shrouds of the thick fog. The ever tempting anticipation of what's gonna happen was palpable in the air.
Then, the sounds resembling an in-air gun battle came to their ears. They heard dull explosions preceded by blue litghtning in a southward direction from the towers and out from the shore.
Finally, the crowd was seized with panic by the sounds, tough no one was moving away. They had no clue that they had just been saved from breathing poison from the air. They still waited to see what would happen next. But the next in this case was the great unknown.(144)
Lydia wiped her face with a used, crumpled tissue. "If Greg doesn't stop them."
Cliff was increduluous, "Just by himself?"
"He has always acted as a one man army."
At this moment, something clicked in Cliff's mind---he understood Macpherson's mystery. They were soul brothers--- The Good and the Evil.(146)
Cliff retired against his better judgement, rationalizing that he would be of more value with a clear mind.
Lydia sat at the observation post with a young security guard. After a few moments, she sent him for coffee. Did she know what she was doing? Did she realize what was about to take place telepathically? We'll never know...
Was it meant to happen right at this point in time...or no time?(159)
But, having seen Abu and Greg pass by undetected, and understanding what they were about to do, Lydia probably intentionally kept her mind a blank. Or was it an act of God? To everyone else, she simply never regained consciousness.(161)
Two hijacking were aborted in Virginia. The flight to Los Angeles exploded somewhere over Pennsylvania and fell to the earth in pieces. Everyone on board, which included the hijackers, perished.
It was Septembre 11th—9/11.(165)
